University of Sheffield - England

The University of Sheffield was founded in 1905 as a result of a merger between three local entities - Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College, and Sheffield Technical School. On 31 May, 1905 the University was granted the Royal Charter. The University started with a student's strength of 114 which has now expanded to 24,500 with students coming from different parts of the world. At the time of its inception, the University offered degrees in Arts, Pure Science, Medicine and Applied Science. The Courses gradually multiplied and there are seven Faculties with several departments under them today in the university.

Faculties and Departments:

  • Faculty of Architectural Studies comprises of departments like School of Architecture, Landscape, town and Regional Planning.

  • Faculty of Arts with departments like Archaeology, Biblical studies, History, Music, Philosophy, English literature, Language and Linguistics and school Of Modern Languages and Linguistics.
    • Faculty of Engineering with subject areas such as Automatic Control and System Engineering, Chemical And Process engineering, Aerospace Engineering.
    • Faculty of Law
    • Faculty of Medicine including departments such as Human communication Sciences, Clinical Dentistry, Medicine and Biomedical sciences, nursing and Midwifery.
    • Faculty of Pure Science comprising of departments like Animal and Plant sciences, chemistry, Computer science, Geography, psychology, mathematics and Statistics.
    • Faculty of Social Science with departments like Journalism, Lifelong learning, Politics.

    University of Sheffield is an internationally recognized leading institute for research activities which can be carried out in the following fields such as Arts and Humanities, Biology, Engineering and Physical Science, Environment, Medicine, Social Science. The University also offers the students Study Abroad Scheme under which the students, can go to Australia, Canada or USA as a part of their degree course. The Library of the University is enriched with a collection of over 1.3 million books and journals providing the students valuable learning assistance.

    The University has three Bursary Schemes depending on factors like the Household Income of the students, their prior academic record and whether they have entered the institute through any Outreach Scheme. The students can apply for more then one of the Bursaries. There are four self-catered halls of residence at Endcliffe, Ranmoor, and Tapton with ideal living condition for the students. There is the option of self catering accommodation in flats and apartments, most of which are owned by the University. In addition there is private sector housing available for the students.
