The Birbeck, University of London originates from the London Mechanics Institute founded in 1823. It was later affiliated under the University of London and became the Birbeck, University of London in 2002. Undergraduate part-time teaching remains the focus of this university, though recently it has been conducting progressive research programs in arts and humanities.
